‘Minding the Gap’: Building a Framework to Bridge Evidence, Policy, and Practice in Chronic Disease Self-Management

This three day international roundtable on chronic disease self-management support will bring together over 20 leading researchers, policy makers, health care practitioners, and consumers from Australia, New Zealand, UK, US, and Canada (with self-management related expertise in public health, health promotion, psychology, sociology, medicine, nursing, epidemiology, rehabilitation sciences, nutrition, health education, health administration, health policy, bioethics, women's studies and First Nations’ health). The aim of the meeting is to consolidate current knowledge in self-management and self-management support, establish a future vision and develop recommendations on how to address current gaps in research, policy, and practice within and across our respective countries. The meeting will result in a Framework to facilitate the development and implementation of high quality and effective self-management initiatives across sectors.

The BCCEWH Tobacco Research Team in Mumbai

The Tobacco Research Program is one of several research areas within the BCCEWH. Three members of our team, Lorraine Greaves, Executive Director, Chizimuzo Okoli, Research Associate, and Natalie Hemsing, Tobacco Research Coordinator, attended the 14th World Conference on Tobacco or Health which took place in Mumbai, India, on March 8-13, 2009.
  
Lorraine Greaves, who is also President of INWAT, presented “Sifting the evidence on Women and Tobacco” at the pre-conference workshop entitled From Kobe to Mumbai- What’s Next for Women and Tobacco? which was held on International Women’s Day. Lorraine also presented on INWAT along with other INWAT leaders, and during a plenary session on Women and Tobacco she presented Women and Tobacco in the 21st Century (1.8MB).
Congratulations to Lorraine and Natalie who won an award for the poster titled The National Lung Health Framework- an oppprtunity for gender analysis (1MB).

Further Advancing the Health of Girls and Women:
A Report on the Women's Health Strategy
On February 12th, 2009, BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre, in partnership with the British Columbia Centre of Excellence (BCCEWH) released a new report documenting progress of Advancing the Health of Girls and Women: A Women's Health Strategy for British Columbia, the provincial women's health strategy. The report, Further Advancing the Health of Girls and Women: A Report on the Women's Health Strategy for British Columbia 2004-2008, documents achievements to date since the strategy was released in 2004.

The original strategy is a framework that guides the health monitoring, planning, program development, policy and research around women’s health issues and allows for a coordinated, province-wide approach to meeting the diverse health needs of girls and women.

Farm Family Health Research Project
Spring 2008
This large cross-Canada study looked at the health impact of Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis (BSE) on individuals, families, and communities.
A team of researchers across Canada funded by PRIONET Canada. The British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health was involved in the project for the province. Little research has been directed at the health impact of BSE on individuals, families, and communities. We need to understand these effects to form and evaluate programs and policies to promote the health of Canadian farm families.

Launch of The Survey
February 13, 2008
The Women’s Health Surveillance project will be officially launching the second phase of the women’s health surveillance website, www.womenshealthdata.ca. The Survey, which is a searchable database of grey literature, will link women's health practitioners, policy makers, health authorities, and women's groups to a range of resources on women's health, including international, national, and provincial documents.
