Linking trauma, mental health and addictions treatment practice

Dr. Vivian Brown will briefly discuss the findings of the Women and Co-occurring Disorders and Violence Study (WCDVS) and her work with Prototypes in California in order to highlight our need to bring evidence to practice as a way of linking and integrating the treatment of mental health, trauma and addictions concerns experienced by women.

Linking addictions and child welfare practice

Dr. Laurie Drabble returns to share results of recently completed research on the role of collaborative and harm reduction oriented values, for bridging the work of child welfare and addiction treatment providers as they support mothers with substance use problems.

Vivian B. Brown, Ph.D. is the founder and recently retired Chief Executive Officer of PROTOTYPES, Centers for Innovation in Health, Mental Health, and Social Services. 

Laurie Drabble, Ph.D., MSW, MPH is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at San José State University.

On November 19, 2009, the BC Centre of Excellence for Women's Health hosted an Open House. All were invited to come and meet the team and to learn about the different research projects and knowledge exchange activities going on at the Centre.

This three day international roundtable on chronic disease self-management support brought together over 20 leading researchers, policy makers, health care practitioners, and consumers from Australia, New Zealand, UK, US, and Canada (with self-management related expertise in public health, health promotion, psychology, sociology, medicine, nursing, epidemiology, rehabilitation sciences, nutrition, health education, health administration, health policy, bioethics, women's studies and First Nations’ health). The meeting will result in a Framework to facilitate the development and implementation of high quality and effective self-management initiatives across sectors.

The Tobacco Research Program is one of several research areas within the BCCEWH. Three members of our team, Lorraine Greaves, Executive Director, Chizimuzo Okoli, Research Associate, and Natalie Hemsing, Tobacco Research Coordinator, attended the 14th World Conference on Tobacco and Health which took place in Mumbai, India.

 

Lorraine Greaves, who is also President of INWAT, presented “Sifting the evidence on Women and Tobacco” at the pre-conference workshop entitled From Kobe to Mumbai- What’s Next for Women and Tobacco? which was held on International Women’s Day. Lorraine also presented on INWAT along with other INWAT leaders, and during a plenary session on Women and Tobacco she presented Women and Tobacco in the 21st Century (1.8MB).

Congratulations to Lorraine and Natalie who won an award for the poster titled The National Lung Health Framework- an oppportunity for gender analysis (1MB).

BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre, in partnership with the British Columbia Centre of Excellence (BCCEWH) released a new report documenting progress of Advancing the Health of Girls and Women: A Women's Health Strategy for British Columbia, the provincial women's health strategy. The report, Further Advancing the Health of Girls and Women: A Report on the Women's Health Strategy for British Columbia 2004-2008, documents achievements to date since the strategy was released in 2004.

Spring 2008

This large cross-Canada study looked at the health impact of Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis (BSE) on individuals, families, and communities. 

A team of researchers across Canada funded by PRIONET Canada. The British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health was involved in the project for the province. Little research has been directed at the health impact of BSE on individuals, families, and communities. We need to understand these effects to form and evaluate programs and policies to promote the health of Canadian farm families.

The Women’s Health Surveillance project will be officially launching the second phase of the women’s health surveillance website, www.womenshealthdata.ca. The Survey, which is a searchable database of grey literature, will link women's health practitioners, policy makers, health authorities, and women's groups to a range of resources on women's health, including international, national, and provincial documents.

The award recognizes a member or non-member of the Public Health Association of BC (PHABC) who has contributed to community development by supporting community capacity, advocating for social justice, mentoring others, and/or promoting the involvement of community members in public health programs.

BCCEWH researchers have partnered with the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU) to document and analyse the experiences of women who use illicit drugs in the Downtown Eastside when accessing primary health care services at walk-in clinics.
