The British Columbia Centre of Excellence has focused its work since 1996 on conducting or facilitating innovative, multidisciplinary research that examines the determinants of women’s health. While the overall mission of the Centre has remained consistent, the topical focus of activities within the BCCEWH has evolved – and will continue to do so – as opportunities and capacity) have themselves evolved. This year, we have renamed our priority topics to emphasize the fact that the mandate of the BCCEWH is to improve women’s health and to recognize the emergence of a new theme on chronic disease. Another theme that is beginning to emerge as the 2010 Olympics approach is women and physical activity.

These topics reflect the continuous evolution of priorities within the BCCEWH, the influence of partnerships with other researchers, institutions, and funding agencies, and priority setting by staff, Health Canada, the provincial Ministry of Health, and our host institution, BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority. This year’s list of priorities reflects, for example, the impact of our partnership with researchers involved with ICEBERGS, a collaboration on gender and lung health, as well as our work with the Women’s Health Research Network of BC.

The current priority topic areas are:
  • Women, Gender, Tobacco and Lung Health
  • Women, Gender, Addictions and Mental Health
  • Women and Health Services
  • Women, Gender and Chronic Disease
  • Mothering and Maternity; and
  • Physical Activity
