Healthy Choices in Pregnancy (HCIP)   This BC-based website offers up-to-date print, media and web-based material designed to support work with women who have tobacco, alcohol and other substance use issues in pregnancy and the childbearing years.

Best Start   This Ontario-based resource centre supports health care providers with implementing health promotion programs, including tobacco reduction, for new parents. Resources include brochures, posters and displays with information on creating a smoke-free environment.

British Columbia Perinatal Health Program   BRPHP has developed a guideline entitled Tobacco Use in the Perinatal Period, designed to assist practitioners in evidence-based assessment and provision of care for pregnant and postpartum women.

Quitlines

Quitlines offer free telephone support from trained specialists who can help develop a personal quit plan or provide counselling to family and friends of smokers. They can also answer any questions you may have and locate self-help materials and other quit smoking support in your community. A list of quitlines by province can be found at on the Health Canada website. They have tailored protocols for pregnant women.

Training for Health Care Providers on Pregnancy and Tobacco

Smoking Cessation Resources For Those Who Work With Women   This Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) resource combines two resources: Stop Smoking, A Program for Women and Asking to Listen: Resources for Perinatal Care Providers. They have prepared a training video, booklet of information and strategies and handouts for providers to assist pregnant women quit smoking.

TEACH (Training Enhancement in Applied Cessation Counseling and Health)   For health care workers who provide counseling services to people who use tobacco. The program, developed at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Ontairo is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of participants in providing intensive tobacco cessation interventions.

Tobacco and Public Health: From Theory to Practice   This is an online tobacco control education tool sponsored by the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit (OTRU). Health care professionals may benefit from this course, by improving their knowledge and competence in the areas of tobacco cessation, prevention and protection. This course is a pre-requisite for the TEACH program, described above.
